font-family: Arial;">Maine has always been known for its dense woods and pristine water ways. These characteristics combined </span><span style="color: rgb(16, 16, 16); font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial;">led Maine to become a significant source of  lumber starting as early as the 1600's and becoming the lumber capitol of the world in the early 1900's. </span><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial;">It took a while for the Industrial Revolution to make its way into the Maine woods; woods thick with immense virgin growth timber towering above the land. These trees, the prey of the lumberjack, were cut by hand, dragged by horse, mule, and oxen and deposited in nearby bodies of water. Maine lakes and rivers were the highway for logs headed to the mill to be processed, but like any highway, accidents happen. For a number of reasons logs would ocasionally sink to the bottom while being transported across these waterways.
